Preserving the craft. Embracing modern technology. Inspiring the next generation of framebuilders.

Sydney Framebuilding School was founded on a simple belief: some of the most rewarding things in life are still made by hand.

For over 150 years, skilled framebuilders have transformed raw steel tubing into bicycles that are both beautiful to look at and a joy to ride. While manufacturing has become increasingly automated, the traditional craft of building a steel bicycle frame by hand continues to represent the highest level of craftsmanship, precision, and care.

At the same time, the craft has never stood still. Modern framebuilding now exists at the intersection of tradition and technology—where hand skills are supported by precision tools, digital design, and advanced measurement systems. At the Sydney Framebuilding School, we embrace both.

Our Mission

Our mission is to preserve the craft while evolving it. We do this by making it accessible to anyone with a curiosity to learn.

We are proudly inclusive and welcome people of all backgrounds, identities, ages, abilities, and experience levels. Whether you are an experienced cyclist, a maker, an engineer, a tradesperson, a student, someone returning to hands-on work, or simply someone who enjoys creating with your hands, Sydney Framebuilding School offers the opportunity to step into a professional workshop and experience the satisfaction of building something that lasts a lifetime

Our Instructors

Our instructors are experienced framebuilders with engineering backgrounds. They bring together practical, real-world knowledge, traditional craftsmanship, and modern design and fabrication methods. This ensures you don’t just learn how to build a frame—you also understand why each step matters, and how modern techniques and tools can enhance precision, consistency, and creativity.

Our Courses

Our courses are delivered across carefully selected workshop venues in Sydney. Depending on class size and the specific course, sessions may be held in different locations to ensure the best possible learning environment, equipment access, and hands-on experience. Each venue is a fully equipped professional workshop designed to support safe, practical framebuilding instruction, combining traditional tools with modern equipment used in contemporary frame construction.

Our Workshop

Every workshop is intentionally small. This allows for individual guidance while maintaining a relaxed, collaborative environment. From your first bronze fillet braze to the final alignment of your completed frame—supported by precision measuring tools and modern alignment systems—you will build practical skills, grow in confidence, and develop a deeper appreciation for both the heritage and the evolution of steel framebuilding.

We believe the bicycle is one of the most elegant and enduring machines ever created.

Our Philosophy

At the Sydney Framebuilding School, we believe craftsmanship still matters.

  • We believe the bicycle is one of the most elegant and enduring machines ever created.

  • We believe traditional skills should be preserved, shared, and passed on —while continuing to evolve through modern technology and innovation.

  • We believe inclusivity strengthens craft, community, and creativity. And we believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the pride of riding a bicycle they built with their own hands.

Welcome to the Sydney Framebuilding School.
